Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi everyone, or should I say “wassapenin”, I’m Nayah I’m a health and wellbeing coach in the NHS. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m from the best city in the world…Liverpool. Proud scouser.

What was it like growing up in Liverpool?

The best, Liverpool is a hidden gem of a city. I grew up surrounded by culture, amazing architecture, and generations of history. The waterfront, museums, galleries, parks, football stadiums and a beach all within easy reach.

What do you remember about fashion and culture growing up in Liverpool as a young kid?

Here, fashion has always been a big deal. As a kid I was wearing Ton Sur Ton, Bon Bleu, Moschino, Kenzo and Nike of course.

Scousers are renowned for priding ourselves on being fashion forward, well presented and well groomed.

Where did you hang-out back then, did it spark up an interest for you? Has it changed?

I hung out in the city centre, as kids do. In shops looking at the latest clothes and shoes and being inspired by my older friends; I wanted to be like them. It’s changed a little now, social media exists. I feel like everyone’s influenced in a new way. I’m influenced and inspired by my city and always will be, but also by national and international trends.

What’s the sneaker scene like in Liverpool? How has it developed?

It has grown exponentially here the last couple of years. People now want more exclusive releases, sneakers that very few people are wearing. It’s refreshing to see the city embracing other silhouettes and brands now. Trends have come and gone but “the shoe” always will be Neon Air Max 95’s (110’s we call them here when they were once £110).

What brands are people wearing on their feet up there?

A lot of Nike. But the last 3 years or so, brands such as Under Armour, Salomon, New Balance and On Running have made their way onto the scene. Independent brands such as Arne are making appearance. Also, a lot of Dior and the usual luxury brands.

When it comes to culture and the fashion industry, how has your city developed into what it is today?

We are a city based on maritime heritage, so it’s very diverse, we are surrounded by many cultures and communities that inspire and influence everything we do. Streetwear has always been the thing here, and that’s very much still the case. Fashion and style remain at the forefront, scouse women are known for being the queens of glamour, style and wearing extravagant outfits.

Where do you like to shop nowadays?

If I’m in the city centre my usual shops are Zara, Flannels and Urban Outfitters. I do drive to Manchester which is only 30 minutes away to go to Selfridges, as we don’t have one here!

What is the food like in Liverpool, and what are your favourite local restaurants or food spots?

We have the world menu on our plate. Places like Mowgli, Elif, Fazenda, Kebbabish Original and last but not least Yum Cha. Any of them! But if you are in the city and need some inspo, we have the infamous Scouse Ghetto Gourmet on TikTok who reviews restaurants and eateries, he’s a Liverpool legend.

What are some traditions or events that are unique to your city?

Well, the Grand National. I think scouser wins best dressed every year! Something that is really random, we buy Christmas Eve pyjamas. As well as Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and Easter clothes.

What do you think is the best way to experience your city like a local?

Walk everywhere and use public transport as much as possible. Get into local pubs and independent restaurants that are outside of the city centre. You’ve got to engage in conversation with as many people as you can because we always have a story to tell and are happy to share them.

What is your favourite neighbourhood in the city and why?

I love the Baltic Triangle, is a stone’s throw from the city centre and waterfront. Its a trendy place, a bursting hub of design, architecture, music, photography and full of creative people, on a backdrop of cool murals, street art, quirky shops, bars, and restaurants. Good vibes.

What would be the perfect itinerary for a weekend getaway?

Explore the city centre, the Liver Building, go to the top of Radio City, have brunch in Panoramic 34, drop into both museums, go on the ferry ride across the Mersey, get to a Liverpool football match and experience Anfield. Also, a visit to Crosby beach to see the iron men and watch the sunset…then party with us!

What is your favourite hidden gem in the city?

Lark Lane, near Sefton Park. A leafy bohemian lane, full of personality, vintage shops, independent bars, restaurants, and cafes. Most tourists stay in the city centre and will miss it off the beaten track experience.

How does your city differ from other major cities in the UK?

This city is so diverse and multi-cultured. It has small chunks of everything. We have some of the most unique locations and period buildings in the country for such a small city. We are a hotspot for filming locations for blockbuster movies and tv series. We have the largest imperial arch outside of China in our Chinatown as well as the oldest Chinese community in Europe! A dock, a promenade, a beach, 2 football stadiums a stones throw from each other.

Is there one thing that really defines your city and makes it unique?

Definitely the people, that’s what makes me so proud. We are the most generous, friendliest people; I’m so confused when people say they hate scousers to be honest! We’ll literally stop to talk to anyone. The scouse community stick together and welcome anyone who wants to be in our city and a part of our culture.
