We chat to Offspring Community member and co-founder of 'Sneaker Sisterhood' Juelzzy.
What do you do as a job?
Currently working in a primary school supporting children with their learning and do a little freelance photography. I am also one of the 4 co-founders of Sneaker Sisterhood.
How long have you been into sneakers and how did you get into them?
I had always been curious about sneakers from age 5, whether they were for performance or lifestyle. The way they were made, use of different materials. The impact it had on the wearability, performance and lifespan of the sneaker. For example the evolution of football boots and astro turfs, the shape, the materials and use of colours like pink and purple.
In basketball Jordans have gone from an on court shoe to an off court, Creating space for self lacing sneakers and different performance options to suit one's body weight, foot shape and so much more.
Do you have an early sneaker memory?
On my 11th birthday my mum brought me a pair of Nike Air Max BWs, she liked them and also brought a pair. At first I was slightly annoyed but when my foot grew and I could fit into her pair I wasn't so mad now.
Do you have a sneaker regrets? What is your sneaker grail?
I wouldn't say I have regrets, what I would say is learn from every purchase I make to help me make a better decision in the future. I also recognise that my taste can change sometimes, our style matures and we get older. It's not a regret in the sense that I shouldn't have brought those sneakers. I acknowledge they no longer have a place in my collection but I could bless someone else with them.
Which brings me onto my ‘grail’. I don't have one, the term has been misused more than the word friend. There are pairs I missed out on due to my age, finances and simply luck of the draw. The resell market and social media have glamorized sneakers and made them more expensive, which means even if I get that pair after saving can they even be worn? The grail could be a remastered retro general release, but I’ll be honest I have been looking at some retail prices with my three sixty twenty-twenty side vision.
What sneakers are in your rotation currently?
Black Air force 1 low. Pink New Balance 990. Chucks. Clarks Wallabees. Crocs
Aside from sneakers What else are you into other than sneakers?
Basketball, whether I'm playing, watching or reading about it. I enjoy watching period dramas when I can, sketching, like collecting vintage cameras – just a few of the many things I am into.
What is your photography style?
My style is currently stripped back and simple, what you see is what you get. I am trying to become more adventurous and explore more styles.
What do you need to improve on?
Celebrating how far I have come since I started taking pictures, believing in my talent and working on the small tweaks that will hugely impact the quality of my work.
I love to shoot sneakers, sports and candid portraits. I am however very particular about who I shoot. I look for certain stand out features, hair, eyes and their smile or laugh. Tattoos and body piercing is something I look for too.
What does community mean to you?
I can be surrounded by a sea of people. From different walks, interests and levels of importance within that community yet we still see each other as human beings. I can find common ground with a collector who is new to the game, loves mids even though I detest them with a severe passion. The same way I can with an OG who used to camp for sneakers. Community is a safe place to learn and connect with everyone.
