We chat to OFFSPRING Community member Ricky a.k.a @ricky_stclaire about all things sneakers, boxing and community.
Tell us about yourself.
I'm Ricky Hosea Jerome St Claire, a 44-year-old husband, father, and sneaker head. I was born in the early 80's and grew up in the 90's and 00's which has shaped the way I see the world today.
Where are you from and what do you do for a living?
I currently live in Stanmore NW London and work for London Underground. I've worked for the London Underground since 2003 in Competence Management sector. I've worked on stations in South and Central London and driven trains on the Northern and Jubilee lines in my tenure.
What influenced you as a kid, what got you into sneakers?
I was heavily influenced by my older brother and just life as it happened in front of me. My brother is 3 years older than me so he was more aware of the things happening and he would manage my expectations more than anything. Growing up in South London in the 80's/90's it was more eclectic in terms of footwear and with the robust colour ways, your head would turn frequently if you noticed footwear like I did. Pumps, Torsions, Discs, Kangaroos, K Swiss, Ewings, Champion, Avia... haven't even mentioned the obvious.
What sneakers are in your current rotation?
Currently, I'm enjoying AM95's, the Neons, SB's, Hyper Crimsons and Blue Sparks are getting a lot of wear.
We've seen your boxing over on Insta - how did you get into it?
I actually fell out of love with the gym and a family friend opened a boxing gym, I've been there ever since. Unlike weightlifting, boxing is something you can make tangible improvements on session to session as well as getting fitter and stronger.
How do you push/motivate yourself to keep going?
It's very human but, I look at people that are better than me and want to reduce the skills gap. I take from each person I come into contact with and try to implement what they have into my own skill set, to keep improving. Being a better me is always the goal.
What would you say to someone who had been thinking about starting boxing?
It's more important to master moving your feet than throwing your fists, learn that part first, everything build on top of good foot movement.
Always stay susceptible to learning.
You've been a community member for a long time now, what's been your highlight?
Retrospectively it was winning the Fragment TS Los, for me it proved that the OS processes work. I was out of the game as a dad, it was my first big pair, and I didn't really know much about the way OFFSPRING operates. After that I've trusted the process win or lose.
What does community mean to you?
The trainers come last, how are you as people? How's the wife and kids, how are you coping with the way life is changes, can I help in anyway? I've had many meets up and chats with people I'd never know if not for the community here. McGinty, Judge, Eja are people I talk to everyday outside of it and for me that's what it's really about.
What's been your favourite sneaker pick up recently?
The really underrated Cave Stone 4's. If you haven't got them, you need to have them in the collection. The shape is great, materials, colour, Nike air on the back... I know Mike never wore them but they're fire.
