We chat to primary school teacher, salsa dancing enthusiast and Offspring Community member Esther aka @es_f.p
Tell us about yourself.
Hola, I’m Esther and I’m originally from Spain, but I have now been living in Birmingham for 19 years. I’m a Spanish primary school teacher, I am very passionate about creating a love for culture, language learning and helping my students develop a range of useful skills for their futures. Dancing and exploring the world of salsa with friends happens to be one of my hobbies aside from collecting sneakers, it gives me a good break from the fast-paced world and allows me to enjoy music to the fullest.
How long have you been into sneakers and how did you get into them?
I have always liked sneakers, adding one or two pairs per year to my rotation. I started exploring the world of adidas and New Balance with a variety of different colourways and models however, my son was quick to introduce me to the world of sneaker collecting and once I picked up a pair of Air Jordan 1 high ‘Bloodline’ straight from Offspring in Birmingham, the journey truly began. I joined my son, steadily adding to my collection and growing my knowledge of the game and the history behind many brands and silhouettes I used to see and buy in the past.
Do you have any early sneaker memory?
One special pair for me that I still own from the early days, prior to collecting, is a pair of triple black Nike Air Max 90’s that have a combination of patent leather and mesh from back in 2015. I originally bought the pair to wear and make use of during my salsa sessions and bought a matching pair of the men’s variation for my son as a Christmas present. So, I’d say that particular silhouette and colourway holds many great memories for both me and my son.
Coincidently meeting Salehe Bembury during my son’s Offspring collection day in Selfridges London creates lasting memories attached to specific pairs for the both of us.
Do you have any sneaker regrets and what is your sneaker grail?
A pair I regret missing out on is the Air Jordan 5 Off-White ‘Sail’. The first colourway (muslin) being a special pair that my son owns and highly values. They are one of many representations of Virgil Abloh’s consistent creative expression. A big grail of mine has to be the Melody Ehsani Air Jordan 1 Mid ‘Fearless’. You’ve got to love the bold and vibrant colours, along with the very cool watch pendant on the laces. Such an incredible concept and an empowering designer.
What sneakers are in your rotation currently?
A recent heavy hitter in my rotation is my Corteiz x Nike Air Max 95’s ‘Pink Tings’, comfort always high on my priority list and these tick that box as well as looking incredible on foot. I also like to include a pair of Air Max 1’s and as the weather has improved my Concepts 'Far Out' have made it in, being amongst my favourite Air Max 1’s in my collection.
As a woman in the sneaker industry can you tell us how you’ve been able to navigate yourself in a predominately male space and your experience so far?
There has been a growing recognition of the important role women play in the sneaker culture and industry. I feel like I have been able to make a mark in my own way by actively participating and contributing to the support of many impactful women that collect, influence, and create in the space. I try to share my energy through my posts and my interactions with others.
I think the creation of communities that form a space for women to engage in conversation and support each other has helped make progress and foster a sense of belonging.
There is still work to be done and the collective efforts of both women and men in promoting inclusivity and diversity will contribute to a more balanced and thriving sneaker culture.
Aside from sneakers what else are you into?
Travelling has always been a top priority for me, something I consistently make time for and will always be a part of me, nothing compares. I will continue to experience more of the world, taking my sneaker rotation along with me each time. For me so far, Venice’s enchanting waterways and picturesque architecture, combined with Mykonos’ vibrant atmosphere and pristine beaches, created an unforgettable Mediterranean cruise experience that makes me want to travel even more.
What does community mean to you?
For me, a community helps people come together, and plays a role in shaping personal and collective experiences. I have been able to create meaningful connections with some incredible people all around the world who share that similar passion for sneakers, you must be willing to exchange and learn from one another, which has allowed me to grow. It’s what makes collecting even more amazing and special than it already is.
Lots of love to everyone and thank you for reading!
