Seems weird saying this in Winter but the 2022 World Cup is underway, and it got us talking here at Offspring about the first World Cup we remember, our favourite World Cup, the best boots, kits etc. After we discussed for probably too long, it was only right that we reached out to the Community to get their opinion on all things to do with the tournament. We’ve picked some of our favourites below.
“The first I remember is 98, I was fully into that, sticker books, wall charts the lot. I think the best World Cup was Japan in 2002 though, feel that had everything, and the Becks penalty at the Saporo Dome, unreal. Best boots have to be Nike R9s that Brazilian Ronnie wore. Hellish!”
“The 1990 World Cup was the first I remember watching. I was fully into it. That’s what made me love Roberto Baggio, you had a prime Gazza, Maradona was still doing his thing, Lineker soiling the grass 😂😂😂😂. The best kit? There have been some great ones over the years, but Brazil 1994 & Germany 1990 (both the home kits) come to my mind first.”
“94 is my first World Cup I can remember, that Baggio miss 😮💨. My best might be 98. The best shirt has to be a 94/98 Brazil shirt. Them times it was just magical, and best boots RNIZZZYS(R9’s) all day 😮💨😮💨😮💨.”
“66, 90 and 98. Even as an England supporter it was probably the Brazilian shirt, everyone had a Brazilian football shirt, didn’t they? Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo. R.Carlos come on! Zidane has some nice pairs over the years and what a player too – overhead kick or head butt for the win 🔥🔥”
“First World Cup I can really remember is Italia 90.... best boots, best player (BAR NONE) is El Fenómeno (R9 🐐) in the silver and blue Mercurials.”

“First World Cup was 1994, was even allowed to stay up late to watch the matches! Overall, it was all about R9, OG Ronaldo for me, had the boots to match my OG Shox and that Brazil team… they set the standards for World Cup footballing excellence for me growing up.”

“Italia 90, first and best. Italy 2002 Kappa top easily best World Cup kit in my lifetime (otherwise it's Brazil 1970). Best boots ever are adidas World Cups or Copa Mundials; absolute classics and there is no other correct answer 😂.”
“Spain 82! bulldog Bobby and Kevin Keegan 😄. Ray Clemence, Peter Shilton, Glenn Hoddle…. Made for a great set of Panini stickers! Fantastic England shirt too. So many great tournaments after but that one for me had some good memories ⚽️🏆.”
“First I remember was Japan/South Korea 2002, I do vaguely remember the David Beckham sending off at 98’ but that may be more the aftermath. I was all about David Beckham in the 2002 era and those ‘Preds’ were all I thought about as young guy. In a sea of black boots, those were special.”
“I was born in 92, don’t remember France 98 well so Japan/South Korea was my first, but Germany 06 was best. The ball was quality. Graham Poll gave someone 3 yellow cards. Serbia got put in the group of death 😂. Rooney got sent off against Portugal. Ronaldo winked. Zidane headbutted Materazzi in the final. So much drama!

With five titles, Brazil is the most successful World Cup team and it seems the favourite within the Community too. With so many great players and their iconic kit, Brazil came out on top in the comments. But will they be crowned the 2022 winners?
Being biased, we’re backing England all the way. It’s coming home.
