Our latest iteration in the ZX 8000 franchise draws inspiration from the bright lights and electric energy of the world’s greatest metropolises.
This time, we turn our attention to Tokyo after dark, where the city comes alive in a sea of neon.
Some crafts are fading. Some stay alive because someone refuses to let them go.
Neon sign making is one of Tokyo’s disappearing art forms, kept burning by a handful of makers. The ZX 8000 ‘Neon Nights’ is our tribute to it, anchored in culture, always evolving.
Meet Hidenobu Takahashi, one of Tokyo’s last neon sign makers.
Takahashi fell in love with neon in his younger years, inspired by the glow that illuminated Yokohama. He was hired at a neon sign shop at just twenty years old and apprenticed for a decade before opening his own store, Smile Neon.
Every sign he makes starts as a straight glass tube and ends as light, shaped by hand, heat, and decades of practice. The adidas Originals ZX 8000 ‘Neon Nights’ carries that light forward in Flash Aqua and Lucid Pink.
Whilst inside Takahashi's workshop we were able to see the process that went into the creation of neon signs, including our very own sign!
Set against a jet-black base, flashes of Aqua and Lucid Pink capture the vibrant glow of the city’s illuminated streets. A glossy lace clip and a high-shine heel clip reflect the towering architecture and shimmering cityscape, while reflective accents bring an added dimension, ensuring the silhouette comes to life when wearing, long after the sun goes down. Last but not least the traditional iconic lace lock comes with a 96 representing the date OFFSPRING was established.
A celebration of the city that never stands still, and the energy that comes alive after dark.
